This class was the second required coding class for my degree. Still with an intro to web design, this class enabled us to create well-rounded sites. We learned different methods of HTML CSS styling while also learning Java script to program functions into sites. As a designer, it is important to understand the full process of designing a digital platform. From the conception of a design to the programmed final version, a designer should be aware of what is required within each section of the process.
The project requirements were to create a website from a pre-existing dataset. For our class, we did the New York census data sets. My favorite part about this project was transferring a narrative from one form to another. The dataset I chose was the New York graffiti census, and with that, my mind started to wonder what story I could create. My project's identity was a New York public gallery. Since graffiti is a rich culture within the 5 boroughs I wanted to make a site for people who are not located within the city access to the street's art. When you first enter the site you choose one of the boroughs and then you are shown some history and examples of artwork that came from that area. When it comes to displaying the data I used Javascript and the dataset API as well as google maps API. When you click on the generate button 4 random locations from the dataset within the respected boroughs and then display a street view from that location. The end goal of this function was to create an almost curated gallery experience within the city. This project is my favorite project I have done with code since there is an enforced identity behind the concept of the site.
